Located within a general medical unit, the ACOVE program is an interdisciplinary inpatient program designed to improve overall quality of patient care and to prevent patient functional and cognitive decline and iatrogenic complications in acutely ill elders. Ideal patients for the unit are older patients (preferably 70+ years of age) who are at risk for loss or deterioration of independent functioning during a hospitalization for an acute illness. An interdisciplinary team, including a Medical Director, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Primary Nurse, House Staff, Rehabiliation Therapist, Case Manager and Social Worker meet daily to establish and implement a plan of care. Specific important outcomes of care for this population include:

  • Reduction in permanent nursing home placements
  • Decrease in readmissions
  • Decrease in use of restraints
  • Decrease in rate of falls with injury
  • Decrease in the use of urinary catheters
  • Decrease in delirium
  • Decrease in total number of medications administered
  • Improve patient and family satisfaction with care.

  • The perioperative nursing staff provide patient-focused care to the surgical patient population, including cardiothoracic, vascular, orthopedics, neurosurgery, transplant, general surgery, trauma, ENT, ophthalmology, and urology patients on two campuses.
  • Practice is developed, implemented, and reviewed, by the Perioperative Practice and Performance Improvement Committee. Membership includes perioperative leaders and staff.
  • Staff development opportunities include the Perioperative Program for clinical nurses and surgical technicians, with and without perioperative experience. The program provides didactic and clinical orientation by perioperative clinical experts on ongoing education.
  • Registered nurses and surgical technicians are recognized and advanced via clinical ladders.
  • Please visit our Perioperative Nursing web page for more information.
  • Our participation in and support for the local Boston AORN  chapter is strong.
