Dianne Anderson, MS,RN
Sr. Vice President Patient Care Services

   Dianne J. Anderson, M.S., R.N., a national nursing leader, has been Sr. Vice President of Patient Care Services since May 2001. As the Chief Nursing Officer, she oversees 1,200 nurses and patient care providers and several patient care departments, including nursing, nutrition services, physical therapy, rehabilitation services and social work.

Dianne came to Beth Israel Deaconess from Glens Falls Hospital in Glen Falls, NY, where she was vice president of operations of the 410-bed regional medical center. In this position she provided leadership and direction for all clinical services, including nursing, pharmacy, case management, pastoral care, rehabilitation, infection control, nutrition, laboratory, radiology, and quality and risk management. She also was involved in planning the strategic direction for the medical center.

She also has held leadership roles with Health Care International Medical Centre in Clydebank, Scotland, where she was director of patient services, and Children's Hospital, Boston, where she was director and nurse manager of the neuroscience program. Prior to that, Anderson held nursing positions at New England Medical Center.

Dianne is the current President of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). AONE, a subsidiary of the American Hospital Association, is a national organization of nearly 4,000 nurses who design, facilitate, and manage care. In this position, Anderson has been actively educating national officials and testifying before the U.S. Congress about national nursing issues, including labor shortages and workplace environment. Her one-year term ends December 31, 2001.

Anderson earned both a master's degree in nursing administration and a bachelor's degree from Boston University's School of Nursing. She is a resident of Boston.

Dr. Terry R. Bard, Rabbi

   Rabbi Dr. Terry R. Bard has led the Department of Pastoral Care and Education at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for nearly twenty years. He initiated the ethics program at the then Beth Israel Hospital in 1986 and has served on the Faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School since 1975. Dr.Bard lectures nationally and internationally, conducts research, provides consultation to medical practices and centers, and maintains a private counseling practice.

Dr. Bard is Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Shalom, Chelmsford, MA. Rabbi Bard was a member of the core Faculty that trained a number of physican mohalim sponsored by the Union of American Hebrew Congregation.

Dr. Bard has written extensively on a wide array of topics related to medical ethics, including AIDS, gene therapy, end-of-life issues, and disability and illness.

Lisa Fahey, RN, BSN, MBA, CNOR
Director of Nursing for Perioperative Services

   Lisa Fahey, RN, BSN, MBA, CNOR, is the Director of Nursing for Perioperative Services at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Lisa is responsible for administrative leadership of inpatient and ambulatory perioperative services on two campuses, which includes Scheduling, Pre-Anesthesia Testing, three periop sites, three OR sites, ECT, Pain Clinic, and three CPD sites. Staff development is fostered through perioperative programs, including clinical ladders for surgical techs, RN training programs, and ongoing education. Lisa leads the Perioperative Practice, Performance Improvement, and Resource Management Committees in guiding practice. Most recently, perioperative services has transitioned major services from one campus to another and completed a successful JCAHO survey.

Patricia Folcarelli, MS,RN
Director, Professional Nursing Practice

   Pat Folcarelli has been a member of the BIDMC nursing staff since 1988. As a clinical nurse, she worked with a team of staff to pilot an innovative "collaborative care unit" at the former Beth Israel Hospital. A PhD candidate at NYU, her research experience includes serving as the data manager for the seminal demonstration project, "Strengthening Hospital Nursing: A Program to Improve Patient Care", funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts. Pat also oversees The Beth Israel Deaconess Learning Center, a nationally recognized and respected patient and family education center which opened in 1996. In addition, Pat is an Instructor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Pat is a graduate of Hunter College - Bellevue School of Nursing and holds an MA in Nursing Administration from NYU. After completing her undergraduate education she worked at New York University Medical Center. Pat has held clinical instructor positions at Northeastern University and Curry College. In 1999 Pat was selected to participate in the Leadership Initiative for Nursing Education Program at the UCSF Center for the Health Professions.

Lisa Kowalczyk, R.N, MSN
Director, Case Management

   Lisa Kowalczyk has been the Director of Case Management at BIDMC for two years. In September 1999, she implemented a new nurse-based model that combines case management, discharge planning and utilization review. Supported by an automated documentation system, the Case Management Department is able to identify and report on clinical, patient, physician, and payor utilization. Nurse Case Managers track quality occurrences and discharge planning activities. This contributes to high quality, efficient patient care.

Ms. Kowalczyk has a strong managed care background from previously working at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Massachusetts Blue Cross and Blue Shield as a case management leader for the metro Boston area. Her clinical experience is in acute rehabilitation with a focus on neurological injuries. Lisa holds a B.S.N. from Salem State College and an M.S.N. from the University of Massachusetts.

Barbara Sarnoff Lee, MSSW, LICSW
Director, Social Work Department

   Barbara Sarnoff Lee received her undergraduate education at Union College and then her MSSW from Columbia University School of Social Work in 1979. She began her career in clinical social work in New York City's Lenox Hill Hospital, and has been at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center since 1980. As a clinical social worker, Barbara practiced primarily in cardiac surgery and the surgical intensive care areas.

Barbara was responsible for the development of the patient/family support program for cardiac surgery and rehabilitation patients, and she provided direct individual, family and group counseling to those patients and families. She expanded her clinical practice and management scope to include obstetrics, gynecology, and neonatal intensive care patients and families. She subsequently transitioned to her present role of Director, Social Work Department. She currently chairs the child protective team for BIDMC and she also serves on numerous medical center and community committees.

Barbara teaches a quarterly session on family violence at the Harvard School of Medicine as a guest lecturer. She is also a guest lecturer at Simmons College School of Social Work where she teaches an annual session on Social Work Leadership.

Marsha Maurer,
Director of Operations

Marsha Maurer, RN, MSN, is Director of Operations in Patient Care Services. An experienced Nurse Executive with an extensive background in acute care, Marsha began her clinical practice in nursing at the Beth Israel Hospital in medicine and cardiology. She is currently responsible for nursing operations and medical/surgical nursing at BIDMC, with direct clinical, administrative, and financial accountability.

Marsha has developed an expertise in a broad array of service and quality improvement concepts and techniques, and has focused specifically on patient satisfaction, rapid cycle improvements, and patient-focused care. Marsha obtained her BSN from Northeastern University and her Masters in Nursing from Boston College. Her Master’s thesis was entitled “Nurses’ attitudes and practice behaviors with substance abusing patients”.

Frank Mitrano, MS, R.Ph.
Director of Pharmacy Services

   Frank, a leader in health systems pharmacy, has directed Pharmacy Services at BIDMC since January 1989 over 10 years. Previously, Frank had developed and led home care pharmacy services of Deaconess Hospital.

An active member of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists for many years, Frank has served on numerous committees and panels related to pharmacy services, including a broad range of home pharmacy topics and issues. He has presented in a broad range of topics in national, regional, and local forums on topics including home infusion of antibiotics, hyperalimentation, and advances in high tech care.

In addition, Frank serves as a member of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Drug formulary commission. The Drug Formulary Commission recommends additions to and deletions from the state drug formulary, the Massachusetts List of Interchangeable Drugs (MLID). Current Massachusetts law requires interchange of less expensive, therapeutically equivalent drug products listed in the MLID.

Patricia Queen Samour, MMSc, RD
Director of Clinical Nutrition Services
Director of Dietetic Internship Program

   Patricia, a nationally recognized leader in clinical nutrition, has directed clinical nutrition at BIDMC for over 10 years. An active member of the American Dietetic Association for over 27 years, Patricia received the ADA Medallion Award in 2000 for her leadership in advancing the profession, and her contributions toward improving nutrition care in the acute care setting. She has held numerous leadership roles within ADA and has served on various commissions, panels, and committees related to clinical nutrition management, quality improvement, medical nutrition therapy (MNT), and clinical nutrition standards and practice.

Patricia has written extensively and is widely published in a variety of clinical nutrition topics. Currently, she is on the Editorial Boards of several publications including: Dietitian's Patient Education Manual, Home Health Nutrition Patient Education Manual, Patient Education Resource Manual, Topics in Clinical Nutrition, and The Soy Connection. She has also written for several clinical nutrition texts including Contemporary Nutrition Support Practice, and the Handbook of Pediatric Nutrition.

As the Program Director of BIDMC's nationally recognized and longstanding Dietetic Internship Program, Patricia is actively involved in mentoring and developing interns, students, and staff.
